Gilles Peterson brings Brownswood to The End

Gilles Peterson knows his music. His career so far has seen him responsible for two of the UK’s best labels of the last twenty years, Acid Jazz which introduced us to the likes of The Brand New Heavies and Jamiroquai, and Talkin’ Loud which brought the likes of underground heroes Reprazent and 4Hero to the mainstream consciousness. In 2006 he decided to launch his latest musical venture, Brownswood Recordings, a label for soulful sounds no matter what the source.

In its short lifespan, it has already been behind classic albums from Bristol soul boy Ben Westbeech, the beat-driven orchestral sounds of The Heritage Orchestra, Japanese adrenalin-fuelled jazz from Soil & Pimp Sessions as well as the first two in the series of gorgeous Brownswood Bubblers compilations. With a years worth of incredible music already behind them, Brownswood will be throwing a party with us to celebrate, and the line up is something else.

The main room see Gilles playing a far reaching four hour set. Trying to pin down what Gilles might play is as pointless as an ashtray on a motorbike; a man with one of the largest and broadest record collections in British music is always going to be tough to pigeonhole, so expect soulful sounds but don’t rule out hip hop, house, jazz, drum & bass, techno, folk, broken beat or anything else for that matter!

Gilles will be joined in the main room by Detroit’s legendary Moodymann, with his ever-soulful house and techno. Rainer Truby of Truby Trio, one of the finest deep and musical electronic outfits in music will complete the main room line up. His work with Truby Trio for Compost Records, as well as remix outings on the likes of F-Comm, Ubiquity, Ninja Tune and !K7 set him apart as a unique talent, whose deep sounds will be a fantastic addition to Brownswood’s line up.

Gilles has curated another cracking line up for the lounge. Ross Allen is a man of many talents, who at various points in his career has been cover for Gilles on his BBC Radio One ‘Worldwide’ show, A&R consultant for Ninja Tune and for Island Records, label boss for Island Blue and Filter Records and a top promoter of nights such as Destination Out at Cargo.

Throughout this time one thing has remained constant, he’s a dab hand behind the decks. Expect eclectic sounds of the highest order. Joining him will be Simbad, a man well known for his deep and soulful sounds; whether on a broken beat or a house tip his tunes have shaken many a dancefloor whilst his recent tune on Brownswood Bubblers Two was one of its highlights. Thristian, also a Brownwood bod and a man with an indescribably good record collection completes the line up in the lounge.

Up in AKA, one of our stellar Saturday nights, Little Creatures are taking care of things. Former Classic resident and boss, Luke Solomon will be playing quality house alongside guest and former label compadre Rob Mello.

Lust Art & Soul, A Personal Collection by Joey Negro

Following the massive success of the debut LUST album, compiled by Master At Work Louie Vega, suSU are now delighted to announce that ‘all things dance’ music connoisseur, production wizard and remix extraordinaire Joey Negro (aka Dave Lee, Jakatta, Akabu, Raven Maize, Z Factor, The Sunburst Band etc) is supplying the soundtrack for the follow up album.

The LUST theme is threaded and has been inspired by Swedish born artist Jonas Larrson who is fast becoming one of the acclaimed names of the visual arts fraternity. Jonas’ tastefully erotic images combine conceptual imagery with textual prose. His unique blend of digitally enhanced monochrome photographs of the female form are then tinged with hand daubed paint and they caused a sensation when they were showcased as part of the ‘Off the Record’ series at ArtSpace Gallery in London last April.

The images from the ’Off the Record’ series provide the exclusive artwork for the LUST albums and a source of inspiration for the DJ compiling them. Following Louie Vega’s New York inspired first edition, Joey Negro has now picked up the baton, supplying two orgasmic mixes of sexy soul, funk disco, acid house, future club classics, exclusive re-edits, house anthems, current dance-floor fillers and unreleased world exclusives.

As a DJ he strives to reflect his extensive love of a massive variety of quality music by playing the kind of eclectic and mind-blowing sets that showcase the many edits and updates of tracks he’s become famous for. The real skill of Joey Negro though, lies in his ability to make these tracks mix-in seamlessly and stand alongside the very freshest cuts as it is demonstrated on the LUST album. Who else can mix into perfection Fela Kuti’s afro beat into Henrik Schwarz’s deep techy grooves?

The first disc effortlessly drifts from funk and disco (Plantlife, Atmosfear) to deep tech house (Larry Heard, Bas Noir) into brand new cuts from Joey Negro’s alter ego, Dave Lee with ‘Latronica’ and then onto the brilliant Pete Heller remix of Underworld’s new single ‘Crocodile’ where the mix climaxes. The second disc is less of a mix and more of a blend of late night / early morning wind-down nuggets from deep in the crates that range from 4 Hero and Nova Fronteira to Chic, The Sunburst Band and then onto Clara Hill and the Alessi Brothers.

LUST again leaves the opposition standing, recognising that graphics and music can feed off each other, creating the perfect synergy between erotic imagery and the breathless sexual energy that epitomises the best dance music.

One of the most outstanding producers and DJs of the current electronic scene is about to drop his hotly anticipated album… Sébastien Léger presents ‘Planets’ which is set for release in November on his own label - Mistakes Music. Featuring 11 tracks written by Sébastien to showcase what his label is all about; ‘Planet’s has quickly taken on other-worldly status and every track has been named after a Planet in our solar system… we caught up with Seb to chat about the album…

Hi Sebastien, how you doing today?

Great… crazy busy.

It has been a crazy year for you in terms of gigging and productions have any particular moments stood out?

I just come back from a South America tour. It was my first time there and I had a fantastic welcome… my craziest gig ever was in Medellin (Columbia. Production wise, remixing Justin Timberlake was like another new chapter in my career too.

What is your biggest achievement so far?

Doing the music I like to play is actually already a big one…

Tell us about your new music projects? You have a new album out soon? Tell us about it?

It’s a compilation of dancefloor tracks that I’ve done. It includes all my influences: house, techno, and deep, chilled, funky alongside my usual moods of funny or serious.

Why did you call it Planets?

No real reason, pretty random, but it fits well with the tracks. Some planets inspired me like Sun (warm), Earth (nature) or Mars (mad planet). It’s also easy to find some name for the tracks too!

Any stand out tracks?

All of them!

You have released a couple on there, what are you planning to release next?

I have a track called “Terra” that will be released on Eric Prydz’s label Pryda Friends. It will include a remix by Eric himself, so don’t need to tell you how hot this record will be J This is the only release i will do outside of my own Mistakes label. All my material will be released on Mistakes…

You don’t view this as an artist album eventhough you have written all the tracks, why is that?

A solo artist album is full of different vibes and tempos - with vocals too… this is more of a compilation of tracks i’ve done made for Djs & dance music lovers.

It is out on your own label, how is that going?

All good. Like I said, it will be full of good tracks, with different vibes as I’m an eclectic dj. You can expect some minimal, some techno, some proper house and some Sebastien Leger’s style.

I notice you love your Adidas clothes and your diamond encrusted headphones… are you all about the bling?

Not really J The headphone are more my jokey attitude. I’m not the kind of person who talks about money and showing my Ferrari (that i dont have)… But i like the hip hop fashion in general, better than the standard electro/rock look.

Any plans for an artist album?

Yes, i will start working on it next year, so i think around end of 2008 or later in 2009… I want to do it right and it’s a lots of work.

Who have you remixed lately?

Justin Timberlake, Duran Duran, Groove Armada, Ali Love and also some great underground track that have been dancefloor hit such as Ida Engberg (Disco Volante) and Julian Jeweil (Air Conditionné).

Who would you love to remix?

Chemical Brothers, Daft Punk, Tiga, Royskopp, Muse, Madonna, Pharell, Lenny Kravitz, Jamiroquai etc etc… I just love good music.

When does your album come out?

Glasshouse Team up with Gatecrasher

Glasshouse, the innovative and consistently excellent pièce de résistance of the Leeds clubbing universe, is on the move. For well over a decade the night has reigned as cult king of the UKs dance underground thanks to a distinctive and all-too-rare combination of stellar resident DJs and an intimate, individualist aesthetic that for years ensured capacity crowds and a fiercely loyal clientele on the strength of word-of-mouth alone.

Having begun life as a unique after-hours haven with a legendary atmosphere, Glasshouse evolved into a wildly successful long-term residency at Mission, and this year celebrated their fourth year hosting the Mixmag Terrace for Cream @ Amnesia in Ibiza. At The Leeds Bar & Club Awards 2007 they garnered an unprecedented gong for Best Club Night and have been repeatedly heaped with A-list praise. Happy Birthday - Ministry of Sound

Who would have thought a rave that started off 16 years ago in a disused bus shed, deep in South London could have come to this?

Well here we are in 2007 still going strong, throwing the best parties in London with the finest DJ’s, and we are sure to keep on going - so in true style befit only to a legendary clubbing institution as ourselves, we throw open the doors and invite one and all to dance the night away and rejoice in 16 glorious years!

It is never going to be easy to pick a line up for an event such as this, but we believe we have put on a full spread, an audio buffet if you will, catering for all needs and giving you the partygoer the full cross section of Dance music, and general party fun, with a line up guaranteed to have you all dancing!

In the main room we welcome Dubfire from Deep Dish for an epic 5 hr set, filled with the same diverse and unexpected grooves that have come to characterize Deep Dish’s energetic and legendary sets behind the turntables. In the Bar the Godfather of turntablism as we know it Grandmaster Flash will blend hip hop jams, breakbeat bangers, acapella antics and more scratching to the ounce.. Quite simply, there is no-one who can touch him in the history of turntablism and DJing, and keeping it Balearic in the Baby Box will be the legendary Alfredo!

So, that’s the superstar DJ’s pretty much covered, but no party would be complete without some good old fashioned dancefloor shenanigans - so upstairs we plan to transform the Lounge Bar into ‘The Party Room’ with pass the parcel, musical chairs and DJ Bruce McClean on the 1’s&2’s. Treats will come to those who play the hardest!

All in all our 16th is going to be MASSIVE so come and join us as we rejoice in what has been one hell of a ride here at the legendary Ministry of Sound.

Following the summery funk-tinged remix package from Degrees of Motion, Cayenne Recordings once again delivers the goods with this latest offering from Germany based duo Sean Finn & Gino Montesano. Getting to grips with the 1980’s classic by Corey Hart (also reworked by Tiga & Zyntherius) the pair turns in the perfect version of ‘Sunglasses At Night’ fresh for 2007.

With five MASSIVE remixes for all the big rooms / fields / marquees and early hours after parties, ‘Sunglasses At Night’ is an anthem waiting to blow up once again. The Moog Mix is a proper piece of jacked up electro-house, whilst the M1 ‘The Club Mix’ keeps it electro based but adds layers of guitar for an Ibiza ‘rocktronic’ moment. N’Solution take it down a dark and minimal route but keeps it driving, whereas the ‘The Chicks On House remix’ is an unashamed hand’s in the air house mix accompanied by the Club Mix which goes into a funky bassline territory.

Canadian based DJ / producer Sultan burst onto the house scene in 2000 forming a close relationship with Deep Dish and their famed label, Yoshitoshi Recordings. Since then, Sultan has gone on to create a huge international presence through the strength of his own tracks, remixes, and mash-ups that make up nearly a third of this compilation - a grand illustration of both Sultan’s skills and Montreal’s revelry status.

“This compilation is a depiction of the DJ and producer in me as well as a reflection of the impact that Yoshitoshi has made on the Dance scene, Montreal and myself over the years. Most of the remixes we’ve made for other people over the years except for the one for Einsturzende Neubauten because we lost it and a few we didn’t think sounded good enough or just didn’t fit in length-wise, but including some that are hard to find because either people forgot about them or simply because they haven’t been released yet, a few we really love, one we think is just ok, some we did for free, some we did for money, some for ourselves without permission and some for friends as swaps but never on time and always at our studio in Ghent.
